PYGMY GOAT PROJECT

ORANGE ACRES BACKBREAKERS

YEAR: 2005 - 2006

Leader:    Linda and Emily McCausland      Contact Info

Scheduled Meetings: First Tuesday of each month - no meetings during January or May (Youth Expo)

Goals: Members will gain knowledge about pygmy goats and have a nice, gentle, manageable pet.  This includes the parts of the pygmy goat, how to care and feed, and how to show.  And, of course, to have fun!
What to expect: Pygmy Goats are CUTE!  And they are a great beginning to showing large livestock.  They have a great personality and are very lovable.  They also teach you a lot.  Care, nutrition and body parts are a big focus of our group every year.  Also patience and an "I'm the boss" attitude.  And no matter what... "SMILE". You should have a pygmy goat for this project, although it is not a requirement.   Many members will already own their pygmy goats when they join, or you can purchase one at any time.
Time Required: Meetings are one day each month, daily care and feeding of your pygmy goat, cleaning of the pen, frequent washing and blow dry and clipping, and frequent walking, plus Youth Expo and the Orange County Fair
Effort Required: In addition to caring for your pet, you will be expected to participate in Youth Expo and the Orange County Fair:
YOUTH EXPO (a "learning fair" of 2-3 days)
Clean-up day to prepare stalls and the barn at the fair grounds
You are responsible for feeding and watering your own animal
If you wish, you may make a poster or display
        Show your animal
Showmanship (you and your pygmy are judged)
Conformation  (just your pygmy goat is judged)
ORANGE COUNTY FAIR (1 week of the 3 week fair)
You may make a new poster or display, or use the one from Youth Expo
You are responsible for feeding and watering your own animal
        Show your animal
Showmanship (you and your pygmy goat are judged)
Conformation (just your pygmy goat is judged)
Your pygmy goat will go back home after the fair
Estimated Costs: Since your pygmy goat is a pet, this is a very long term commitment.  Pygmy goats start at around $100 but can go much  higher.  As with everything, the better the goat (better conformation and/or from championship stock) the more money you will need to spend.  Feeding your pygmy goat will cost around $20 per month.  A halter will cost around $10.  To groom you may like to have a stanchion (about $300) and clippers (about $300), but usually one of the senior members has everything you need so you will not need to purchase these items.  OABB should also have a pair of clippers.  You will probably want to keep your pet pygmy goat at home.
