YEAR: 2006 - 2007

Leaders:    Robert and Jann  Contact Info

Meeting:    Second Monday of each month, plus field trips

Goals: To learn the principles of rocket flight and build and launch your own rockets.  Advanced members may design and simulate rockets.  And, of course, to have fun!
What to expect: Each meeting is a mixture of classroom and construction of rockets.  After we get at least one rocket built, we'll go to the desert to launch them.  Model rockets can fly from a few hundred to over 2,000 feet high.  In addition, you might want to hold back your best looking rocket for the Youth Expo and Fair - or create a poster for some of the model rocketry knowledge you've acquired during the year.  Each year, our first meeting is a "pizza party" to watch "October Skies"
Time Required: Meetings are one day each month plus an occasional week-end day field trip.  Plus you should prepare a rocket and/or poster for Youth Expo and the Orange County Fair
Effort Required: You will be expected to show off your rocket(s) - the ones that weren't totally destroyed during launching - and your knowledge by participating in Youth Expo and the Orange County Fair:
YOUTH EXPO (a "learning fair" of 2-3 days)
You can display your rocket and/or make a poster
If you choose to show your rocket, you must have launched it before Youth Expo
    ORANGE COUNTY FAIR
You may make a new poster or display, or use the one from Youth Expo
Estimated Costs: Build one or more rockets at $5 - $20 each (available from local hobby stores or the Internet); take one or more cost-shared day trips (usually less than $20).  There may also be a small materials fee of around $20 for parts to build a rocket, engines, display stands, and paint.  Advanced members may choose to design and build their own rockets; the software for this (RockSim from Apogee) costs $99.95, or you can spend time on the leader's computer at his home.
Optional: Field trips are optional, but are one of the most fun events of this project.  We go out to the desert at Lucerne Dry Lake to launch the rockets you have built, and possibly even designed.  And twice a year there is a large competition called RocStock - it is fun to watch others lauch rockets of all sizes - and to visit the vendors.  Some of these rockets can fly over 1 mile high!
